Differential

A mechanism that allows wheels on the same axle to rotate at different speeds.

The differential enables smooth cornering by distributing torque between left and right wheels. Without it, tires would drag and wear prematurely. Types include open, limited-slip, and locking differentials. Gear oil lubricates the internal gears and bearings. Symptoms of failure include whining noises, leaks, or wheel hop. Proper lubrication and inspection of seals maintain reliable performance. Differentials are essential for stability and traction, especially in performance and off-road vehicles.
