Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

A standardized alphanumeric code indicating a specific vehicle fault.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored in the ECU when sensors detect abnormal operation. Each code begins with a letter (P, B, C, or U) representing the system, followed by four digits. Reading these codes with an OBD-II scanner guides technicians to potential faults. For example, P0301 means Cylinder 1 Misfire. However, codes identify symptoms, not exact causes further testing is needed. Understanding DTC structures helps mechanics perform accurate, efficient diagnostics and avoid unnecessary part replacements.
