How Traction Control System (TCS) Works


When you accelerate from a stop on a wet or icy street, sending too much engine power to the wheels causes them to lose grip and spin uselessly.

The Traction Control Process:

  1. Detection: Wheel speed sensors detect that a drive wheel is spinning significantly faster than the non-driven wheels or the actual vehicle speed.

  2. Action: The vehicle computer instantly steps in to restore traction using two methods:

    • Brake Force Application: It applies gentle brake pressure to the slipping wheel via the ABS hydraulic pump.

    • Engine Power Reduction: It briefly reduces engine torque by retarding spark timing, adjusting throttle position, or cutting fuel to specific cylinders.

  3. Result: Power transfers back to tires with grip, allowing your vehicle to move forward smoothly without fishtailing or spinning out.

Why Are My ABS and Traction Control Lights On Together?


It is extremely common for both the ABS Light and the Traction Control Light to illuminate simultaneously on your dashboard.


Because Traction Control relies entirely on the ABS wheel speed sensors and hydraulic control module to operate, any failure within the ABS system automatically disables Traction Control as a safety measure.

  1. Plug in an OBD2/ABS Scanner: Connect your scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC) under the driver-side dashboard.

  2. Scan the ABS/Chassis System: Select the ABS/TCS module diagnostic option.

  3. Read Stored Fault Codes:

    • C0035–C0050: Indicates a specific wheel speed sensor circuit fault (e.g., Left Front, Right Rear).

    • C0110: ABS Pump Motor Circuit Malfunction.

    • C0121: ABS Valve Relay Circuit Malfunction.

Can You Drive With Your ABS and Traction Control Lights On?


Yes, but with caution. When both lights are illuminated:


  • Your standard hydraulic brakes will still function normally to stop the car.

  • However, your Anti-Lock Braking and Traction Control capabilities are completely disabled.
